I Caused it, but He Rectified it!

Updated: Jun 7, 2020

Have you ever made a decision to do things your way? How did it work out for you? John 8:7-9, Jonah 1

I know I am not the only one who has decided to do things my own way resultantly creating chaos and making others around me the causality of my war. There are so many times where we want to blame the devil for what has happened to us, but the truth is, the devil had nothing to do with it. It was all us; the result of not submitting our will completely to God. I think about Jonah. He thought he could run from the will of God when he was told to go to Nineveh. Instead of going to Nineveh, he ran off to Tarshish. Now before we judge Jonah too harshly, think about times where God told you to do something and you decided to go the opposite way. We focus on Jonah being swallowed by the whale, but we fail to look at the lives that were affected by Jonah’s disobedience. The whole storm was a result of what Jonah caused not only for his life, but those around him. When Jonah got out of the boat, the storm was calm, but there were repercussions for his actions. In the end, God had mercy and brought Jonah back to the place he was originally called to go to.

Let’s look at another story. Take the woman caught in adultery whom the Pharisees brought to Jesus in John 8. No one made her do what she did. She did it out of her own desires. The mess that was created was caused by her own will. In that moment Jesus could have turned a deaf ear to her and let them stone her for her transgressions, but instead Christ decided to do something else. He rectified the situation for her. Jesus turned to these men and said, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” One of the most powerful statements made by Jesus was to the woman. He first asked her if any man has condemned her. She said no. He then responds and says, “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.”

I want to encourage you that although you may have caused it, we serve a God who can rectify it. You may feel as if you have done too much or gone too far, but you serve a Father that is willing and ready to love on you and restore you back to his perfect will for your life. Do not give up. You are not alone. All God desires is truth in the inward parts. He wants to hear you call to him for help. This does not mean we continue to sin or run from his will so that grace may abound, but when we fail and miss it, his grace is sufficient enough to fix it.
